{"id":570,"date":"2023-09-09T03:13:01","date_gmt":"2023-09-09T03:13:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/walamootkinlodge.org\/?p=570"},"modified":"2024-09-07T05:41:51","modified_gmt":"2024-09-07T05:41:51","slug":"national-forest-service-trail-maintenance-weekend-october-7-8","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/walamootkinlodge.org\/?p=570","title":{"rendered":"National Forest Service trail maintenance weekend October 7-8"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Welcome to the annual BMC\u00a0Forest Service Work Party Weekend!\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We have again coordinated with the Forest Service and local OA Lodge to offer a group service camp trip in the fall. This year, we will be working with the <em>Wenatchee National Forest District<\/em> on trails and campgrounds in the upper Icicle Creek watershed, just outside Leavenworth, WA in the Cascades. Along with the Forest Service folks, we may also be working with the <em>Wenatchee Back-country Horsemen<\/em> &#8211; this is the crew that made the Jack Creek Trail so nice!\u00a0 And even more trails in the area can be made better with a lot of Scoutpower!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scouts will be formed into crews based on experience and endurance.&nbsp; Order of the Arrow members and other experienced scouts will lead each crew to complete tasks assigned by USFS Rangers who will work hand in hand with us.&nbsp; We will also have a big multi-unit campfire and campfire program!!&nbsp; Check with your units and sign up for what should be a great fall weekend of service, fellowship, and fun!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>When:\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>October 7-8, 2023 (<strong>Main work party\u00a0begins at 8:30am on Oct 8<\/strong>.\u00a0 If enough interest, we can put together a second work party on Saturday the 7th. Camping is available both Friday and Saturday nights.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>Where:\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>Icicle Creek campgrounds near Leavenworth, WA (Exact campground to be determined by trail boss) &#8211; Please see the FAQ below for additional details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>What:&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/em>De-brushing and trail clearing operations along several trails.&nbsp; There will also be some opportunities for younger scouts such as campground clean-up and prep for the winter season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Coordinator:<\/strong> Joe Ryan, 814-404-8506, <a href=\"mailto:joe.ryan@pnnl.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">joe.ryan@pnnl.gov<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>FAQ for trip:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Do volunteers go there by troop, or meet somewhere and go up together?\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Travel will be organized by unit.\u00a0 Some local transportation (1-3 miles) is likely to be required to get crews to their location or trailhead in the morning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What work is expected?\u00a0 Will my 11 years old new scouts able to handle it?\u00a0 Or should I focus on 1st class and high (possible OA candidates)\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We will have service opportunities for all ages.\u00a0 Older scouts will work in areas that require significant hikes and\u00a0heavier clearing activities.\u00a0 Younger scouts will be assigned closer to camp.\u00a0 Very young scouts can focus on cleaning and prepping the campgrounds along the valley.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do scouts bring any hand tools?\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Yes, loppers and hand saws will be needed.\u00a0 Work gloves and boots, of course. We\u2019ll also try and coordinate 2-way radios for crews, so let me know if you have them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do scouts need to camp? Where and when will we be camping?\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We will be camping at one of the campgrounds up Icicle Creek from Leavenworth, a bit over 3 hours from the Tri-Cities.\u00a0 There are many, and the exact one will be chosen by the Trail Boss the week before based on where we&#8217;re needed, but it is likely to be one of these three: <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/recarea\/okawen\/recreation\/camping-cabins\/recarea\/?recid=58689&amp;actid=29\" target=\"_blank\">Chatter Creek<\/a>;\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/recarea\/okawen\/recarea\/?recid=58963\" target=\"_blank\">Rock Island<\/a>;\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/recarea\/okawen\/recarea\/?recid=58661\" target=\"_blank\">Blackpine Horse Camp<\/a>.\u00a0 Scouts don\u2019t <em>need <\/em>to camp, but we would like people to be available at 8:30am on Sunday to join the main work crew. If there is enough interest, crews can also be organized for Saturday, Oct. 7.\u00a0 There will be a large multi-unit\u00a0dinner and campfire program on Saturday night!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What are the plans for meals?\u00a0\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Dinner (street tacos!) will be provided Saturday night and we will have a dessert (dutch oven?) potluck.\u00a0 All other meals (especially trail lunch)\u00a0are the responsibility of each unit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are there water sources at camp and at work site?\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It is somewhat uncertain whether the water will be on that time of year.\u00a0 Each unit should plan on bringing enough water for use and we can adjust if the water is still on.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bathroom? Shower at camp?\u00a0\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Latrines are available at all camps, but none have showers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How far is the trail (work area) from camp?\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Depends on the crew. Some will be close to camp while others will require a hike in.\u00a0 Other tasks are between.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You mentioned optional Saturday work parties?\u00a0 How will that work?\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We were forced to move the main work day to Sunday to avoid Council conflicts, but the rangers are willing to work with Scouts\u00a0all weekend if there is enough interest.\u00a0 If advanced Scouts put together a crew, they can backpack in and stay in the field overnight Saturday at or near\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wta.org\/go-hiking\/hikes\/trout-lake\" target=\"_blank\">Trout Lake<\/a>.\u00a0 This will lessen the hiking and give more opportunity for work.\u00a0 There is also enough work for the younger Scouts clearing the Icicle View trail that both days would work fine.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do you need adult volunteers at work site?\u00a0 Campsite?\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Yes.\u00a0 It would be best if each crew had at least two adults, although that may not be necessary for all and perhaps there will be two \u201ccrews\u201d managed by a set of adult volunteers.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What kind of transportation (truck, van, car) do you need for transferring scouts and trail trash ?\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Some trucks might be handy, but certainly not a huge number.\u00a0 A couple of vans might be very nice to transport crews to trail positions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome to the annual BMC\u00a0Forest Service Work Party Weekend!\u00a0 We have again coordinated with the Forest Service and local OA Lodge to offer a group service camp trip in the fall.
